Before relocating to the Mid North Coast, Roger had a distinguished career as an Army musician and music educator. Commencing his career as a musician, and culminating in his appointment as the Regimental Sergeant Major of the Defence Force School of Music, and the Australian Army Band Corps, Roger served in the Regular Army for a period of 21 years. During this time he served throughout Australia, and also served on exchange in the United Kingdom. Roger’s musical highlights are many and include the opportunity to perform with many of Australia’s leading singers and performers.
On leaving the Regular Army Roger transferred to the Army Reserve. In this role he served as Band Master of the Band of the 23 Field Regiment Band, until he was appointed Music Director of the Australian Army Band, Newcastle. Roger served in this position for a period of 6 years.
After leaving the Regular Army, Roger, who has an extensive background in both conducting and teaching, became the Band Director and a music teacher at SCECGS Redlands in Cremorne, Sydney. During his time at Redlands he established a band program which saw over 300 students learning wind instruments each week. In addition, Roger was also responsible for the school’s concert bands which performed for the local community on a regular basis. During his 14 year tenure at SCECGS, ensembles under Roger’s direction toured NSW, Queensland, South Australia and undertook a 5 week European tour, which culminated in performing at the ANZAC Day service in Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery.
As the Music Director of the Manning Valley Concert Band, (formerly known as the Greater Taree City Band), he is developing and encouraging collaboration between school music departments, music institutions, and community music ensembles. Hopefully this will result in our young musicians developing a life-long commitment to instrumental music.
